When one thinks of the word travel one
thinks of going to a foreign country. That’s hardly surprising. Many people
equate going abroad as travelling. For them local destinations are nothing more
than a trip. If you really want to travel then it has to be a foreign country.
So foreign country it is then. Luckily for
you there are more than 190 countries out there for you to visit. Ok, some of
them are not really open tourist but there’s still over a hundred that you can
go to and enjoy yourself in.
That said, it’s not like you can just hop on the next plane out and go to those countries. It doesn’t quite work that way. There are certain things that you need to do first in preparation for your departure and eventual arrival to those countries.
Passport – You’re going to need one of these. It is basically your identity
card telling other countries that you’re a citizen of the country that issued
the passport. It’s a record of who you are and a statement by your country that
says you are who you say you are.
You can apply for a passport anytime. There
may be some identification requirements. Fees will also need to be paid in
order to process your request. However, it shouldn’t take that long before you
get one that you can use.
Visas – It’s an endorsement that says you are allowed to enter, stay and
leave the country that gave that visa. Most countries require you to have a
visa affixed to your passport before they will let you enter. Some countries
don’t require a visa based on certain country to country agreements.
You can check whether or not you need to
have a visa by checking out their respective embassies. If they do require it
you will then need to apply for a visa from their embassy. Make sure you follow
the instructions and submit the needed information so your visa application
goes through without a hitch.
Learn
about the country – It may not seem important
but it actually is. You don’t enter a dark room without preparing something
like a light and maybe a picture of what to expect in there. The same is true
when going to a foreign country.
Each country has its own culture. It also
has its own set of rules and regulations – laws if you will. What may seem
inconsequential to you back home may be something major in the country you’re
visiting. You don’t want to wind up breaking any of their religious, social or
legal taboos that can put you in a lot of hot water.
Checklist
of what to bring – You’re not going to bring
things that you won’t need. However, it is important to bring things that you
will. For example, if you take medication bring them with you. You may also
want to bring your prescription in case you need to buy. Just make sure you can
bring your medication with you. Some countries may not allow them so do check.
Bring the proper clothing as well. If
you’re going to be there to sightsee and travel around you may want to bring
clothing that is easy and comfortable to wear. Make sure they are also
appropriate for the weather that you are likely to face. If it rains there on a
regular basis you may want to bring a jacket or something like that.
